Open Mind, Full Belly

Sometimes being sustainable is more than checking the label at your local grocery store--sometimes it comes down to looking at what is growing around you (or what is growing at Green String) and using it in ways which are not always immediately apparent. For instance, we've been selling a lot of edible flowers at the farmstore. Arugula flowers, calendula flowers, and flowering kale and collard tops. The sweet, nutritious tops of our flowering brassicas, although not conventionally sold, are perfectly edible, delicious, and good for you! Unfortunately, the advent of the commercial grocery store has gotten us into the (we think fallacious) mindset that only a handful of dependable, aesthetically consistent items are food: broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, onions, tomatoes...But there's a whole world of edible plants, not to mention varieties and variations on these staples that are not only edible but delicious, novel, and good for us! We encourage shopping for food like a forager--go with an open mind and a full belly to see what the earth has to offer that day. Green String is happy to announce that we are now carrying Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery goat and sheep's milk cheeses in the farm store! Producing local, organic goat and sheep's milk cheeses since April 2013, this farm-based creamery creates delicious, top quality cheeses and can identify each of their 200 goats by name! We now offer three of these scrumtious cheeses, all given Miwok names: the Liwa, a 3-day fresh goat cheese, the Kenne, a soft-ripened goat cheese, and the Assa, an aged goat cheese. Click here for more information on this wonderful local farm and their farmstead creamery cheeses! If you or someone you know have been considering our internship program, now's the time to apply! The summer session is a great time to experience the farm in full swing--applications are due on or before April 15th! For inquiries about our internship program and for information about the upcoming Summer 2016 intern program, please visit the internship page of our website: http://greenstringfarm.com/green-string-institute. Public farm tours are back! Public farm tours are held on the first Saturday of the month at high noon(12pm) and meet at the farm store. If you would like to book a private tour, please contact Green String's farm store manager Lora Kincaid at lkincaid@greenstringfarm.com or call the farm store at 707-778-7500 Photographs below: New!
