Winter’s Harvest Benefit Supper

The supper will be a delicious farm fresh meal with a simple winter harvest soup, herbed potatoes, mixed greens salad, okonomiyaki (Japanese cabbage pancakes), and sweet treats.

In 1935 America, there were 6.8 million farms (or roughly a ratio of one farm for every 18 people) Today, there are 2.1 million farms, or a ratio of 1 farm for every 136 people (pulled from the EPA website).  There are many consequences of this shift, one of the most significant being a loss of accountability due to the fact that very few people know a farmer anymore.  The usual handshake or “Hey Bob, how are the tomatoes this year?” of greeting you would give to your local farmer has been almost unanimously replaced with lodging complaints, often via email, to the secretaries of elected representatives who then take our complaints, mutilate them, and smoosh them into a national industrial farm bill.  We have traded the accountability of knowing our neighbor who grew our food, with this.  

In light of this, it’s no wonder that our kids are growing up without a sense of where food comes from. How odd. When asked where wings or salad comes from, many kids will answer, "The supermarket!?"

This is one of the many reasons we here at Green String believe that it is not only important to grow healthy food with integrity, but to be accessible and to pass our food along directly from the hands of those that grew it to those that will eat it.  

In honor of this tradition, and in the spirit of teaching our youth about how food is grown and helping them make the connection between food and real, live farmers, we at Green String are partnering with MentorMe Petaluma to bring kids and their mentors to the farm for a day of learning, harvesting, and preparing a meal for the public. And we want you to join us for this meal. All proceeds will go to MentorMe Petaluma.
